Kayleen Brasswell of Wyandanch High School at the Freedom Forum 2024
Since 2017 Herstory has been the Long Island representative of the statewide Freedom Forum project launched by the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy to highlight and confront social inequities. Through sharing writing produced by participants in Herstory workshops, our annual multilingual Freedom Forum uses community literature to examine the cracks in the Liberty Bell and inspire audience members to take action on specific issues. Our Freedom Forums have led directly to publishing immigrant student narratives in our Brave Journeys anthology [link to this book on pubs page?], Herstory’s work at the intersection of race and environmental justice, and the centering of student voices through our work in schools and focusing on issues students must now confront at a young age, such as gun violence and XXX.
Herstory’s other public events over the years include readings for legislators and school board members; conferences produced in collaboration with the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University, Hofstra University’s Center for Civic Engagement, and national and local nonprofit organizations; other forums that bring together people from different sectors to unite around a social justice concern; community readings in Spanish and/or English; and Herstory’s signature gala, featuring readings from memoirs in progress by Herstory workshop participants.
