Herstory at a Glance

"While you can argue with a political position, you can't argue with a story"

—Rev. Jeanne Baum,

Herstory writer on the power of memoir writing to effect social change.

Our Mission

It is our mission to bring unheard voices, both near and far, into the public arena;

to transform lived experiences into written memoirs powerful enough

to change hearts, minds, and policy.

Herstory Writers Network is dedicated to helping people produce high quality memoir writing and to promoting and using this writing as a powerful tool to conquer oppression and create systemic change. We ensure that the voices of those most silenced and marginalized are discovered through guided memoir writing workshops and then heard and celebrated through public forums and policy campaigns.

What began as a single memoir writing workshop in Southampton, NY in 1996 became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1997 and has since blossomed into a local, national, and international network of Herstory workshops, facilitators, writers, and champions. Herstory’s network spans many languages, communities, and institutional settings, from elementary schools and major research universities to maximum-security prisons and county jails.
